Family Newsletter 10/28

Posted Date: 10/27/24 (6:30 PM)

Dear North Eugene Families,

As we move into the final week of October, we are reminded of the changing season and the reflections it brings. Halloween and Dia de los Muertos, with their blend of playfulness and tradition, are just around the corner—a time when many of our students enjoy celebrating, and our community comes together in various ways. Amidst the festivities, we encourage everyone to stay mindful of safety and respect, fostering a welcoming environment for all.

As always, we are here to support each student in their journey. Let us approach the week ahead with care and connection.

GO NORTH!

Halloween Expectations

Halloween day is around the corner, and we want our students to be able to enjoy this day while at school. Here are some expectations for our Highlander students if they choose to wear costumes:
  • School dress code
Costumes must follow the school's dress code.
  • No offensive content
Costumes should not be offensive, promote illegal activities, or stereotype someone's culture, gender, heritage, or religion.
  • No props
Props like fake weapons, plastic swords, guns, wands, bows, and arrows are not allowed.

    No masks or face paint
Masks, face paint, or any item that may impede vision or make it difficult to determine a student's identity are not allowed.

    No disruption
Costumes should not interfere with daily responsibilities, both in and out of the class.

    Comfort
Costumes should be comfortable enough to wear for the entire duration of the school day.

    Preparation
Makeup or hair coloring should be applied at home.

    Check with administration
If in doubt, check with the administration team on any questions you may have when it comes to the expectations around costumes on Halloween day.
Thank you in advance and go Highlanders!

4J Student Cards for Eugene Public Library

All Eugene School District 4J students receive their own Eugene Public Library (EPL) card as part of a partnership with Eugene Public Library! Library cards were delivered to all 4J students last year and will be automatically renewed yearly until they graduate or leave the district.

New library cards are being offered to all new students and kindergarteners this year. If your student does not receive a card once your home school has delivered library cards, please contact or visit Eugene Public Library.

Below is information regarding EPL student cards.

Student cards:

  • Provide immediate access to Eugene Public Library's online resources and the ability to borrow five physical items at a time.

    • Online resources include ebooks, audiobooks, research information, live homework help by professional tutors, streaming movies including documentaries and instructional videos, music, and more.

    • Physical items include books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, art and technology tools, games, educational toys, puppets and more.

  • Will be distributed by each school's library or administration office.

  • Are free of charge, including for students who live outside the City of Eugene.

  • Can be upgraded to a standard library card with higher borrowing limits at no charge.

  •  Are automatically issued to all K-12 students enrolled at 4J neighborhood and alternative schools unless they or their parents choose not to participate. Charter schools are not included.

  • Are automatically renewed each school year for continuing 4J students. New cards will be issued to students joining the district (kindergarteners and new students).

The initial account password is the student’s 4J ID number. We encourage patrons to change their password upon first logging into their account and record it in a safe place. Teachers, 4J librarians, and school secretaries can assist with ID numbers as needed. Please note that Eugene Public Librarians cannot access 4J student ID numbers.

4J students who already have a standard Eugene Public Library card may choose to keep and use both cards or cancel one of their cards.

For preschoolers: Eugene Public Library offers free library cards to all children ages 0-5 who live in the 4J district, regardless of home address.

We appreciate your patience as cards are distributed. Should you have questions about getting a Student Card, please contact your school's administration office.

For questions about using, upgrading, or canceling a Student Card account, please contact Eugene Public Library online, in person, or by phone at 541-682-5450EPL’s website posting
